STANSW continues to support the teaching of Physics from years 7 to 12, with a range of workshops for beginner to experienced teachers. With the new Physics syllabus to be implemented as of 2018, 2017 will prove to be a pivotal year for Science in NSW. Collaborate, learn and network with colleagues from across the state to discuss best practice for teaching the new course. Experienced HSC teachers and markers will pass on techniques, stories and pedagogical advice on how to improve the teaching of Physics.

Keynote Address:

 

Les Kirkup

Les holds honorary professorships at the University of Technology Sydney, and the University of Sydney. He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals throughout his career and has written several textbooks. Many of Les’ teaching and educational development activities have focused learning through inquiry and enhancing the student experience in laboratories. His contributions to teaching and learning were recognised nationally in 2007 with the award of a Carrick Associate Fellowship and again in 2011 with the award of an ALTC National Teaching Fellowship. In 2014 he was awarded the Australian Institute of Physics Education medal for his national contributions to physics education.

 

Abstract

Inquiry and problem solving as the curriculum heats up


In his keynote, Les will discuss inquiry and problem solving in the context of a content area to be taught from 2018 as part of the Stage 6 physics syllabus: thermodynamics. His presentation will include opportunities for attendees to engage in hands-on exploration and examine the use of open-ended ‘Fermi-type’ problems to stimulate and enhance student interest, critical thinking and problem solving capacities.

Completing STANSW Physics Teachers Conference will contribute 5 hours of QTC Registered PD addressing Standards 6.2.2, 6.4.2, 7.4.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

6.2.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice Participate in learning to update knowledge and practice, targeted to professional needs and school and/or system priorities.
6.4.2 Apply professional learning and improve student learning Undertake professional learning programs designed to address identified student learning needs.
