Scholarship Opportunities for Future Science Teachers

Science and mathematics teachers play a critical role in the lives of students, providing the problem-solving and analytical skills needed to thrive in a complex and changing world. The NSW Department of Education is committed to supporting the teaching and learning of STEM subjects in NSW public schools, and each year offer a range of scholarship opportunities to support future and current teachers in becoming the best teachers they can be.

Applications for this year’s scholarships are now open, and provide amazing opportunities for current HSC students, university students and approved teachers with the NSW Department of Education to study to become teachers of high-demand subject areas including science and mathematics.

The Teacher Education Scholarship is available to HSC students who are planning to become teachers of high-demand subject areas, including mathematics and physics combined with chemistry or biology. Scholars will receive a number of benefits, including:

· $7,500 per year of full-time study
· $6,000 appointment allowance
· A permanent full-time position in a NSW public school following successful completion of studies.

The department is also invested in enhancing the careers of current teachers. The Teach and Learn Scholarship (High Demand Subject Areas) is available to approved teachers with the NSW Department of Education who are interested in retraining in a high-demand subject area such as physics or mathematics.

Through the Teach and Learn Scholarship, approved teachers can receive a number of financial and professional benefits, including:

· Up to $20,000 per year of full-time study
· $500 per week while completing a practicum
· Up to eight days of study leave per year of full-time study.

The Teach and Learn Scholarship is an incredible opportunity for casual and temporary teachers to secure a permanent teaching position in a high-demand subject area, and for permanent teachers to gain additional competencies.

Scholarship applications close on Friday 27 August 2021. To support students and current teachers in the application process, the Teach NSW team will be hosting a series of webinars to provide further information about scholarship opportunities and tips on preparing and submitting a scholarship application.
