When we started planning for 7 Decades in 7 Days, we certainly didn't think we would be back in lock down. There was always the possibility, however pragmatic optimism had us seeing you all in person during National Science Week. The pragmatic part also had us preparing an alternative should the need arise and alas it has.
We've got planned for you, an innovative, free and exciting virtual 7 Decades in 7 Days world, register now and step inside to explore 70 years of scientific and education advancement. Have a look
here at what's in store for you.
Come and see some great work being done in science education in the Virtual Exhibition Hall and listen to our stellar line up of speakers across the week in the Virtual Auditorium, including both the NSW and Federal Chief Scientists, the Director of Research at the Australian Museum, an Aboriginal Astronomy Lesson with Aunty Jo Selfe, Dr Karl and more. Whilst we'll miss seeing you in person, this is a wonderful opportunity to use and play with innovative technology.
As we prepare for our 70 year anniversary we do so reflecting on our journey to where we are now, and the many people who have helped shape our Association, who had, and have a strong passion for science education and building a community of support for science teachers. Sadly last week we said farewell to one of them, Jim Sturgiss passed away peacefully Friday afternoon. Jim was on Council 2012 - 2014 before becoming the Science Representative on the Board of the Professional Teachers Council of NSW and was working with us on our Online Professional Learning Program up until his last few weeks. Jim was an inspiration to those he taught, and a generous mentor to teachers and colleagues in many staff rooms and across the wider education community. His continuous contribution to the Association and to science education more broadly was immense. He will be sadly missed, and remembered fondly by many.
We're living through some challenging times, I recognise many of you are in lockdown and teaching online, supporting your students as best you can, and giving all you have to continue delivering high quality learning. Self care is important during these times to nurture and protect yourself from burnout. Remember you are part of the STA Community, reach out to us or the networks you have built through our conferences or courses, reconnect with your peers and remember we are your Association - here for you.
Hoping to connect with many of you during 7 Decades in 7 Days across National Science Week.
Yours in Science
