2022 Future Focussed STEM - STEM for the Global Learner - NESA Accredited

The Alice Springs Declaration (2019) sets all educators the goal of developing students that are

• confident and creative individuals
• successful lifelong learners
• active and informed members of the community. Students who are resilient and develop the skills and strategies they need to tackle current and future challenges

STEM principles give expression to authentic inquiry-based learning.
Authentic STEM learning opportunities delve into both the K-6 Science and Technology and 7-10 Science syllabi to enable students to be immersed in inquiry-based learning, develop critical thinking skills and enable all learners to adapt, grow and flourish in a rapidly changing world.
 
The STANSW K-10 Conference Future Focussed STEM - STEM for the Global Learner, will provide an opportunity for K-10 teachers to be immersed in hands-on activities, resources and learning strategies to embed in the classroom and beyond.

Join us on Wednesday 14 September at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney to explore practical and curriculum based examples of K-10 STEM learning experiences that spark curiosity, inspire innovation and empower students.   

Completing STANSW K-10 Conference 2022 – Future Focussed STEM will contribute 5 hours of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and Assessment of NSW Curriculum/EYLF addressing standard descriptors 1.2.2, 2.6.2 & 3.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

9.00am - Keynote: Facing the Now with High Possibility STEM Classrooms: Ten directions for success in Australian schools. Dr Jane Hunter, UTS (45 mins) 

9.50am - Morning Tea in the Calyx 

10.30am - Professional Learning Community sessions (45 minutes) 

In these sessions we will collaboratively design evidence-based practice to teach difficult concepts, whilst examining our beliefs and assumptions: Why are we doing this? Why are we doing it this way? What pattern of behaviour is helping us and what is not? How am I ensuring personal mastery? How am I sharing my expertise? What have I improved lately? How do I know that works? 

11.30am - Workshop 1 (1 Hour)

Option 2: Aboriginal Bush Tucker Tour: Walk with a First Nations guide through the Botanic Gardens to learn more about Indigenous bush foods. Kalkani Choolburra, Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust 

1.45pm - Workshop 2 (1 hour)

Option B: Hands-on with MicroBits - The Mighty Power of the Microcomputer - inquiry STEM Learning through the Use of MicroBits. Ian Fairhust, Knox Grammar Preparatory School

3.00pm - Workshop 3 (1 hour) 

Option A: Powerhouse: Future Space. An international collaboration that ignites wonder in STEM through connection with experts and experiments on the International Space Station. Sophie Poisel, Head of the Lang Walker Family Academy at Powerhouse Parramatta 

Option B: How to create a functional greenspace resource. Peter Dawe, Community Greening Project, Royal Botanic Gardens 

Option C: Using Minecraft and An Engaging Context as a Way to Capture Students Interest, Incorporate STEM Skills and Assess Learning. Susanne Williams, Lindfield Prep, Newington College 

4.00pm - Keynote Plenary: ACARA Digital Technologies Focus: A quick demonstration of work done in schools as part of the ACARA Digital Technologies in focus project where Science, Maths and Technologies collide and make sense! Martin Levins, University of New England (30mins)
