SUMMARY:2026 Scientific Critical Thinking Network: Skills for Evaluating Thinking
DESCRIPTION:Join our online scientific critical thinking network developed in collaboration with the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley)\, Nobel Prize Outreach and Global Access Partners.\nSTANSW has partnered with UC Berkeley\, Nobel Prize Outreach and Global Access Partners to provide NSW teachers training on practical activities that encourage critical scientific thinking amongst students. \n2026 Critical Thinking Session 4: Skills for Evaluating Thinking \nIn this session\, our presenters from UC Berkeley will demonstrate a unit of work in which students learn and practice skills to help them evaluate a variety of information that they encounter in their lives\, such as online information\, social media posts\, scientific investigations\, and everyday situations. Students practice skills to help them determine whether information is factual and analyse the conclusions that are drawn from it. Students discuss the role of different types of cognition\, such as cognitive shortcuts and biases (including confirmation bias)\, and consider the impact of these types of cognition on health decisions on individuals\, scientific research\, and society. Students will practice slow thinking techniques and an actively open mindset\, which can be used to reduce the errors from fast thinking and cognitive biases when evaluating information and making decisions. \nFurther information and unit resources: Unit 5: Skills for Evaluating Thinking – Scientific Thinking for All: A Toolkit \n  \n \nS. Emlen Metz\, PhD\nLawrence Hall of Science\nUniversity of California\, Berkeley \nDr. Metz conducts qualitative and quantitative research on student and teacher thinking and learning about scientific critical thinking\, using what she learns to develop curricula for high school and undergraduate classrooms. She is committed to building student understanding of key conceptual tools from science and psychology in such a way that they are able to use them beyond the classroom\, towards more thoughtful and informed personal and societal decision-making. She is deeply interested in critical and scientific thinking as social practices\, and strategies for scaffolding more effective dialogues. She earned a Ph.D. in Psychology at the University of Pennsylvania in 2017\, working with Jon Baron\, Michael Weisberg\, and Angela Duckworth on the psychology of epistemology in adolescents and adults; and a B.A. from Swarthmore College in Philosophy and Psychology. \n  \nSTANSW is a NESA recognised PD provider. Prof. Peta White\, Deakin University\nClimate Action Education: Teaching and Learning in the Polycrisis \nThe Polycrisis is represented by human-induced climate change\, biodiversity loss\, plastic pollution and many more socio-ecological challenges that express themselves in various ways locally and globally. International policy has been developed that provides leverage in all education jurisdictions: the OECD PISA Science Framework 2025 with the support document ‘Agency in the Anthropocene’ and now the 2029 Climate Literacy Framework. Both policies will be unpacked in this presentation. Teaching and learning sequences co-designed for year 5 and 6 students by our research team\, scientists\, teachers\, and students will exemplify how to offer climate action education. We know that young people have strong desires to understand what is happening and why as well as how to take action to transform our societies for regenerative futures. Teaching and learning for regenerative futures requires responsible decision making and agency from teachers and students in informed education systems.\n\n\n5:05pm – 5:15pm\nTea Break \n\n\n\n5:15pm – 5:45pm\nNetworking\n\n\n\n5:45pm – 6:30pm\nBen Newsome\, Fizzics Education\nOn the AVA Challenge – STEM design spring for space \nDiscover the AVA Challenge\, a STEM design sprint designed in partnership with the NSW Dept. of Education STEM enrichment team. In this session\, you will learn how your students will apply design thinking and the engineering design process to solve known NASA shortfalls for the Artemis missions and pitch these to the Australian Space Industry\, all guided by a comprehensive and free unit of work. https://avachallenge.org/\n\n\n\nPrimary Pricing Per Person\n\n\n\n\nSingle Day \n\nFull Series \n\n\nPrimary Member \n$65\n$125\n\n\nPre-service Member\n$30\n$55\n\n\nNon-Member\n$120\n$180\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nSecondary Program Day 4: Data Science\n\n\n\n\nTime\n\n\nSpeaker\n\n\nTopic\n\n\n\n4:30pm – 5:05pm\nDr Sarah Digan\, University of Wollongong  \n \nWorking with large data: A framework for teaching critical data practices \nThe new NSW Science 7-10 Syllabus (2023) places ethical\, evidence-based decision-making with data as a core requirement of the new mandatory Data Science focus areas. Yet what this looks like in a secondary classroom – what practices students need\, how those practices connect\, and how teachers can facilitate and assess them – is an area where both research and practical guidance remain limited. This workshop offers a research-grounded framework for understanding and teaching critical data practices in secondary science. Drawing on an emerging model of evidentiary data practices (Unshelm et al.\, 2025; Digan et al.\, under review)\, we examine what these practices look like in secondary classrooms and what changes when generative AI becomes part of the process. The framework is illustrated through two publicly available tasks using real occurrence and climate data from the Illawarra and large global poverty datasets. Participants will engage with elements of both tasks\, work with the framework as an analytical and design tool\, and discuss how to adapt these ideas across their own teaching contexts.
