Teaching General Capabilities in Science Education

An opportunity for primary teachers to join with teachers of junior science teachers to improve the continuum of learning from K to Yr 10.

The event will be held in-person on the 5th May at Royal Botanic Gardens Sydney with the program repeated in an online format on the 8th May.

The event is focused on developing the General Capabilities from the Australian Curriculum in the context of Science.

Program Outline
The conference is divided into two strands; Primary and Secondary Strands.
Workshops and activities will align with syllabus and content outcomes so teachers can easily link back to school programs and apply these learnings directly to the classroom. Workshops will focus on examples and assessment of capabilities in ICT, Numeracy, Literacy, Creative and Critical Thinking, and/ or Ethical and Intercultural Understanding-all through the lens of science and technology.

Online follow-up sessions will be held after the event to support implementation of the strategies explored in the workshops.

Benefits for participants:
• links to the research and evidence base for deep learning
• teaching and learning illustrations of practice
• advice on sequences of learning
• practical tools to evaluate the impact on student learning

Description
Content, contexts, and capabilities. Join with colleagues to explore ideas and approaches for creating meaningful and effective science lessons. Hear from a range of experienced teachers and other experts about proven strategies and resources to help your students prepare for life in the 21st century.  We know intuitively that science develops general capabilities, but with little time to spare in our busy weeks, how can we get maximum engagement and skill development out of science lessons? Hear about how other teachers intentionally integrate the development and assessment of general capabilities into science and technology contexts. A range of workshop presenters will explore innovative evidence-based approaches; cutting edge educational technologies; and practical resources that are ready to implement by both specialist and classroom teachers.

Year 7-10 science is crucial for shaping scientifically literate 21st century citizens, especially those who will not go on to study senior science. Join a range of experienced teachers and other experts to look at how rich assessments, hands on learning, and creative uses of technology can transform your junior classes. The use of relevant, contemporary contexts for learning not only allows the embedding of general capabilities but can also increase student engagement.
