Meet the Markers of the 2021 HSC Science Examinations

When: 31 March - 2 April 2022
Where: Online

Being a marker for the Higher School Certificate examinations is one of the most sought-after avenues for professional development for science teachers, but not all teachers can be involved in marking. Each year STANSW offers Meet the Markers as a professional development event where teachers who have not marked the previous year can increase their understanding of the marking and judging processes and further develop strategies to better prepare their students for these external tests and examinations.

While the program includes the traditional Stage 6 Science course workshops for Biology, Chemistry, Earth & Environmental Science, Physics, Investigating and Extension Science, these are supplemented by additional workshops by NESA looking at exam development, the Results Analysis Package, marking matters and consistency of grade allocations.

These workshops aim to increase understanding of the HSC examination development and marking processes and also making use of available data to analyze your school's HSC results, identifying areas of the syllabus where improvements can be made in teaching and learning.

Meet the Markers is also highly recommended for both early career teachers taking senior classes for the first time as well as for our pre-service teachers – past attendees have found it a valuable insight and reported that it helped to develop their confidence as they prepared to enter the profession.

Past participants also comment that this event was marked “not to be missed” for their PL calendars

An extension to the MTM program next year will be trialed for Biology with the opportunity for Biology teachers  to join a professional learning community.  Participants will engage in forum style sessions on the day, and come back for review of their implementation in two follow up sessions.
