SUMMARY:Young Scientist Information Session
DESCRIPTION:Join our Young Scientist Information Session to learn about the Young Scientist Program and how to get your students involved! \nWe’ll provide an update on: \n\nNew resources\nCompetition dates\n2026 prizes\n\nYoung Scientist celebrates scientific inquiry and creativity and encourages students to ask big questions. \n\nRecognition plays a powerful role in inspiring young people. Receiving a prize builds confidence\, validates effort\, and encourages students to see themselves as scientists and innovators. For many\, the experience of being recognised at a state level becomes a defining moment that motivates further learning and future pathways in STEM. With over 100 monetary prizes awarded each year across primary and secondary categories\, the Young Scientist Program ensures that a wide range of students across NSW are celebrated.\n\nNew Focus Area: Climate Action\nClimate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time\, and one that strongly resonates with young people. \nIn 2026\, we are launching a new suite of prizes to encourage student projects involving reduction of carbon dioxide (CO₂) or other greenhouse gases. These prizes invite students to direct their concern for climate change into action\, rewarding scientific inquiry and innovative technological solutions that demonstrate how science\, engineering and creativity can help shape a more sustainable future. This focus area includes projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions either directly\, or indirectly\, for instance by improving how efficiently energy and resources are used. \nRegister here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/6dq_VTzzQEWdSRU6zYvBLQ

SUMMARY:Scientific Critical Thinking Network: Investigating Evidence for Causation
DESCRIPTION:Join our online scientific critical thinking network developed in collaboration with the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley)\, Nobel Prize Outreach and Global Access Partners.\nSTANSW has partnered with UC Berkeley\, Nobel Prize Outreach and Global Access Partners to provide NSW teachers training on practical activities that encourage critical scientific thinking amongst students. \nThis online 1 hour session is free for STANSW members.  \n2026 Critical Thinking Session 2: Investigating Evidence for Causation\nIn this session\, we will demonstrate a unit in which students are introduced to essential concepts related to causal reasoning in the context of scientific research on well-being. They explore cause-and-effect relationships by investigating how different strategies impact a person’s overall well-being. Students learn causal reasoning by identifying alternative explanations\, such as unnoticed variables or random chance\, and by using indicators of causation such as association\, plausible mechanisms\, and timing. They practice how to distinguish correlation from causation and explore how scientists apply these methods in research\, including through randomised controlled trials. These skills help students evaluate both everyday claims and scientific data\, enabling them to make better-informed decisions for themselves and their communities. \nResources: Unit 3: Scientific Uncertainty & Probabilistic Reasoning – Scientific Thinking for All: A Toolkit \nSTANSW is a NESA recognised PD provider. This online session can be logged as 1 hour of PD towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW. \n  \nMembers – please login to register for a ticket.\n \n

SUMMARY:2026 Differentiation in Science Course
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a 2-day online course designed to delve into the nuances of differentiation for inclusion. We meet with specialists in the field and share strategies to cater for diverse learners\, that we can embed directly into our classrooms.\nSuitable for both Primary and Secondary teachers\, the 2026 Differentiation course has been updated to include managing AI tools to personalise learning\, embedding meaningful Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives\, and strengthening links for Primary science. Whether you’re looking to challenge high achievers\, support learners who need additional support\, or enrich your program with ways to customise learning for students\, this course provides actionable tools  you can use immediately. \n  \nDifferentiation Day 1: Students Characteristics & Wellbeing\nThursday 7th May 4.30pm – 6.30pm\nPart 1: Students requiring learning support\, presented by Fiona Butler\nThis session will explore the interplay between learning and well-being in a practical context. The presenters will discuss the nature of common learning disabilities\, including ADHD\, ASD and the variety of Specific Learning Disorders.  The session will focus on how to cater for students with disabilities through assessment and in the classroom via differentiation. Factors informing planning and teaching\, such as Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs and the NCCD\, will be explored. \nPart 2: Gifted and High Potential Students\, presented by Silvia Rudmann\nThis session will discuss the characteristics of high potential and gifted students\, as well as the importance of identifying high-ability students and implementing differentiated learning strategies that enhance engagement.  Participants will discuss challenges in identification of HPGE students\, including twice exceptional students\, disengagement\, and students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. \nAll sessions will be held virtually and recorded. The course is designed to be collaborative and will involve discussion and sharing. \n  \nDifferentiation Day 2: Differentiation for Disability and Gifted & High Potential Students\nFriday 8th May 8.30am – 4pm\nPart 1: Inclusive education for students with disabilities: collaborative teaching practice (CTP)\, presented by Mark Finlayson\nThis session is a presentation on applying collaborative teaching practice for inclusive education for students with disabilities.  The presenter will provide discussion on the methodology and best practice for collaboratively approaching differentiation in the inclusive classroom. \nPart 2: Science in the Fishbowl\, presented by Silvia Rudmann\, Claire Houston (Primary) and Roshni Singh (Secondary)\nThis session is a presentation based on putting theoretical and pedagogical frameworks on High Potential Gifted Education into practice.
