The STANSW Primary Forum is a full-day professional learning experience designed by primary and science educators, for primary educators. This event is about designing science lessons together, connecting ideas, teachers and expertise from across NSW.

Program Outline

Implementing the Science and Technology K-6 Syllabus (2024): Building Teacher Knowledge, Understanding and Confidence

Courtney Frost and Nichole Wood , Science and Technology Advisors K-6, NSW Department of Education 

This session supports primary teachers in developing the knowledge, understanding and skills needed for effective implementation of the Science and Technology K–6 Syllabus (2024). Participants will unpack the aim and structure of the syllabus, exploring how its design strengthens content connections, embeds research-informed practice and promotes coherent learning across K–6.
The presentation will guide teachers through key support materials, including NESA’s teaching advice, planning tools and professional learning resources. Participants will also explore NSW Department of Education sample scope and sequences, units of learning, and aligned professional learning opportunities. By the end of the session, teachers will have the knowledge and confidence to access and implement syllabus-aligned resources to create engaging learning experiences.

Collaborative Lesson-Building

Work in small groups to design lesson sequences aligned to the new syllabus using templates. Immersive sessions for different stages, covering content areas:

    • Human Body

    • Living Things, including Adaptations and Ecosystems (supported by zoo tours)

    • Includes cultural learning experiences, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge in science

Tours & Live Learning

Guided zoo experiences connecting classroom concepts to animals, environments and real-world science.
