This conference, designed for K-10 science educators, will focus on developing the skills of Working, Thinking and Questioning Scientifically.
The purpose of this conference is to provide activities that can assist to create a skills progression for students in the new NESA syllabuses. It aims to unite educators, curriculum developers, and industry experts to enhance students’ scientific skills collaboratively across Stages 1 to 5.
Opening and keynotes
Nathan Hart is a Professor of Comparative Neurophysiology at Macquarie University, Deputy Dean of Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Nathan leads the Neurobiology Lab and is renowned for his pioneering work in comparative sensory biology.
The Program
The Primary stream will feature a program of ‘round-robin’ style short workshops, showcasing a range of science practicals for primary stages, aligned to the new primary science and technology syllabus. Including:
- Making Terrariums: Learn how to teach Earth’s systems with Annie Martin (PLC Sydney).
- Investigating Sound with Wood: Explore Aboriginal perspectives with Grace McIntosh.
- Sensory Observations in Primary Science: Hands-on investigations with Lesley Gough (Western Sydney University).
- The Sky is the Window to Our Universe: Engaging astronomy activities with Fiona Grant (Central Coast Grammar School).
- Embedding Aboriginal Perspectives in STEM: Practical activities with Destiny Paris (CSIRO).
- Hooked by MyScience: Explicit teaching and real-world enquiry with Anne Forbes (Macquarie University).
7-10 stream will feature workshops to keep science educators on track with the implementation of the new syllabus, prac demonstrations and essential resources. It will cover the following areas:
- Practical Investigations to engage students in scientific thinking.
- Dry lab demonstrations, simulations and experimentation to reinforce scientific concepts.
- Incorporating data science principles to teach students data analysis and interpretation skills; using data science techniques to solve real-world scientific problems.
- Leveraging AI and integrating AI tools to enhance students’ understanding of scientific concepts in your classroom.
- Mapping skills across stages and for Depth Studies and continuity of scientific skills as students advance through different year levels.
