About Associate Professor Helen Georgiou

Dr Helen Georgiou is an Associate Professor in Science Education at the University of Wollongong. Her background as a high school physics teacher continues to inform her research and teacher education work, particularly in supporting meaningful engagement with science in secondary classrooms. Helen was a lead researcher on a Department of Education–funded project investigating the role of writing in high school science, focusing on how disciplinary writing can support students’ conceptual understanding and reasoning. Her work in this area bridges classroom practice and research, offering practical strategies for improving student learning through writing. In addition to her research, Helen teaches and mentors preservice teachers, including those preparing to teach secondary physics. She is passionate about developing evidence-based approaches to science education and continues to collaborate with schools, teachers, and researchers to improve outcomes for students.
